The Indonesian folktale of “Bawang Puti” (Garlic) is a Cinderella-type story that rewards the dutiful and helpful sister, Bawang Puti, with a magical pumpkin filled with gold.
This painting depicts an Indonesian migrant domestic worker at a Hong Kong vegetable stall. Unfortunately, the pumpkin she is buying does not hold any riches.
